• Wowza Media Server 3.5 for Amazon EC2 AMIs

Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) is a cloud-computing platform that virtualizes computing resources as virtual machines. A single virtual machine configuration is registered as an item called an Amazon Machine Image (AMI). This article provides the public AMIs that are pre-configured with Wowza Media Server® 3.5. You can select one of the pre-configured AMIs to automatically launch a Wowza Media Server 3.5 for EC2 instance in Amazon Web Services™ (AWS) AWS Management Console.

Note: This article provides AMIs that are preconfigured with Wowza Media Server 3.5. To get AMIs that are preconfigured with an earlier version of Wowza Media Server, see the AMI Archive.

    AMI Types

Wowza® provides two collections of pre-built AMIs, which are based on the licensing model option that's used.

Option 1: Bring Your Own (LicKey)

The LicKey License option enables you to use your regular Subscription (Daily or Monthly) or Perpetual license key with your Wowza Media Server 3.5 for EC2 instance. When using this option, billing for your running instance time and bandwidth consumption is managed by Amazon. Wowza Media Server Subscription users will continue to receive a separate monthly invoice from Wowza for usage of the Wowza Media Server software and AddOns. This option provides access to all Wowza Media Server functionality and all premium AddOns, including Wowza Transcoder (for 64-bit instances only), Wowza nDVR, and Wowza DRM.

    Option 2: DevPay

The DevPay License option enables you to use a Wowza Media Server software license that's embedded in a pre-built Amazon DevPay™ AMI (a separate license isn't needed). This option provides the convenience of a combined monthly invoice from Amazon for running instance time, bandwidth consumption, and Wowza Media Server usage; however, it doesn't provide access to the premium AddOns.

For more information about service, signup, and pricing, see Wowza on Amazon AWS.

    Release Notes

If you've used our pre-built AMIs for an older version of Wowza Media Server, you should be aware of the following important changes that have occurred:

Starting with Wowza Media Server 3.1.2 AMIs

    • The following default accounts are configured with the username wowza and the password set to the instance ID of the running Amazon EC2™ instance:

    • JMX
    • Stream Manager
    • RTSP Publish

The instance ID of a running Amazon EC2 instance always starts with i-. You can get the instance ID either through the AWS Management Console or by executing the following command in a Telnet session that's attached to the running EC2 instance:
    Code:
    wget -q -O - http://169.254.169.254/latest/meta-data/instance-id
    • We are only building 64-bit AMIs since all instance types are now supported.

Starting with Wowza Media Server 3.0.4 AMIs

    • The password of the default wowza FTP user account is set to the instance ID of the running Amazon EC2 instance.

Starting with Wowza Media Server 3.0.0 AMIs

    • You must log-in to your instance using the user name ec2-user when using secure Telnet. After you've logged-in with this username, you can switch to the root user by entering the following command in the Telnet window:
      Code:
      sudo su -
For more information, see "Managing the instance over an SSH session" in the Wowza Media Server for Amazon EC2 User's Guide.

    Important

    • If you're using Wowza Transcoder AddOn along with an Amazon EC2 instance that supports NVIDIA CUDA resources, the transcoder will only function properly if the instance is rebooted after the initial startup. We're working with Amazon to try and resolve this issue but at this time, this is the only workaround.
