A Beginner’s Guide to Wowza Streaming CloudFebruary 23, 2018
So, you’ve signed up for your trial of the Wowza Streaming Cloud™ service—now what? Maybe you aren’t sure what to do first, or how much time to set aside to start exploring your trial. To help you get started, we’ve provided this end-to-end live-streaming workflow, which you can set up in a matter of minutes.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- An Android (4.4 or newer) or iOS (8.1 or newer) mobile device with a built-in camera that has access to a mobile data or Wi-Fi network (ie., a smartphone or tablet).
- An active Wowza Streaming Cloud account (trial or production).
First, let’s set up the publish part of the workflow—the part where you are actually capturing video. For simplicity, we are going to use the Wowza GoCoder™ app to turn your mobile device into a professional-grade streaming camera.
Step 1: Download and install the free Wowza GoCoder app from the App Store or Google Play. After you get confirmation within your Apple or Google account that installation is complete, you should find the GoCoder app either on the home screen or within the apps on your mobile device.
Step 2: Click the app icon to make sure it launches properly.
If it is working properly, it will launch with a view of the basic controls with an instructional overlay.
Exit out of the app, and set your mobile device aside for the time being. We will come back to it once we have set up the stream and playback.
Now, we will set up the stream processing, preparing your stream to be visible to users across a variety of networks and devices.
Step 3: Log into your Wowza Streaming Cloud account.
Step 4: Click “+Add Live Stream” in the top navigation bar.
Step 5: Give your stream a name.
Step 6: Select a processing region.
In general, it is best to pick a location that’s as close as possible to you geographically. (When a location is selected, it will be highlighted with an orange border.)
Step 7: Choose your source.
For this example, we are using the Wowza GoCoder application you installed in the Publish section above—so, select Wowza GoCoder.
You will not need to change any of the other default settings on this page, so just click “Next” to continue.
Step 8: Set up playback by selecting the Wowza Player and Responsive radio button settings. Then click “Next.”
Step 9: Configure the Wowza Hosted Preview/Web Page.
By default, Wowza Streaming Cloud will create a hosted page with your web stream. Give your page a name, then click “Next.”
Step 10: From the review page, click “Finish” in the lower-right corner.
Step 11: Start your live stream by clicking one of the green “Start Live Stream” buttons.
Step 12: Configure your GoCoder app to the live stream.
While the live stream is starting, make sure your iOS or Android device is connected to your wireless carrier or local WiFi network, and launch the GoCoder app on your iOS or Android device.
Select/tap the gear icon in the top-right of the screen to display the target options.
Select Wowza Streaming Cloud (the first selection).
After selecting Wowza Streaming Cloud, the GoCoder app will present a screen requesting the connection code generated when you created the stream above.
You can find it on the Video Source and Transcoder tab for your stream. It can be found just below the Video Thumbnail and hosted page URL.
Enter the code and click “Connect.” After your GoCoder app has connected, click the red button in the lower-right corner of the GoCoder app to start streaming.
After a few moments, you should see your stream in the Video Thumbnail.
Congratulations! You have just completed setup of an end-to-end live stream, which is viewable by any size audience on almost any device.
Step 13: To view the live stream you just set up, either copy and paste the URL for your Wowza Hosted Page into the navigation of a web browser, or click the hyperlinked “Open” text to the right of the URL to view your Hosted Page.
Important: Remember, after you have finished viewing/using your stream, be sure to stop streaming, so you don’t use up your trial or continue to incur charges.
To watch how to get started and manage a live stream, check out the videos below. While these videos do not use Wowza GoCoder, much of the process will be the same as what has been outlined in this post.
