Wowza Streaming Engine version 4.2 is now available on AWS Marketplace

We have some really exciting news to share about Wowza Streaming Engine software on AWS Marketplace. First off, version 4.2 is now available for both Wowza Streaming Engine 4 standard and bring-your-own-license (BYOL) offerings. New features in the Wowza Streaming Engine Manager user interface, as well as within the API, allow users to easily manage their live streaming content delivery to large and distributed audiences through content delivery networks (CDNs), the Wowza Streaming Cloud service, and other destinations. We have also updated our Amazon Machine Images (AMIs) to support HVM, the virtualization technology recently adopted by Amazon, which enables support for the latest instance types—including M4, C4, and T2.

There are several important distinctions to make with this release:

The current offerings, Wowza Streaming Engine 4 standard edition and BYOL edition, will

  • become limited to existing, “subscribed” customers only and remain available for no more than 180 days. This change was necessary in order to offer new instances types in new regions.
  • will support only Wowza Streaming Engine version 4.1.2 and earlier.

The new offerings, Wowza Streaming Engine 4 BYOL pro edition (hardware virtual machine; HVM) and Wowza Streaming Engine 4 pro edition (HVM), will

  • not support legacy instance types, including M1 and M2. Equivalent instance types based on performance and cost have been added.
  • support only Wowza Streaming Engine version 4.2 and later.

Fear not: Wowza Streaming Engine is otherwise the same great product you know and love. Better yet, Wowza Transcoder, nDVR, and DRM (formerly premium AddOns) are now built-in features that you can use on unlimited channels for both AWS Marketplace offerings. Previously this was possible only on the BYOL offering. New enhancements to Wowza Transcoder also enable VP8/VP9 video and Opus/Vorbis audio decoding, plus VP9/Opus encoding to enable live streaming using the WebM format.

We hope you’re as excited as we are about the improved integration between Amazon Web Services and Wowza Streaming Engine software. As always, please give us your feedback so we can ensure that Wowza Streaming Engine on AWS Marketplace continues to exceed your expectations.
