Hi!

Currently we have a little bit of issues with wowza and java. Last weekend java crashed a couple of times, and i`m not sure what the cause exactly is. I hope you can help me out.

Problem: Wowza stopped working. Dmesg shows:

Any clue how I can resolve this? We got, in total, about 10 publishing streams and a maximum of 100 viewers. The streams are about 700kbit/s.

It looks like the server is not properly tuned. First, the file descriptor count is not set properly (ulimit):

Max File Descriptor Count: 1024

Second, I would remove the special GC settings. These are rarely better:

-XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC -XX:+CMSIncrementalMode -XX:+UseParNewGC

Third, I would upgrade to 2.2.4.

The error is an out of memory. I do not know of any leaks in 2.2.3 or 2.2.4 so I would suspect it could be custom code.

This is most likely a problem with your RTMP output. It is beyond free support for us to help with custom RTMP implementations.

Be sure yoiu are running latest Wowza and Java. These problems are usually cause by memory leaks. If you have any custom code, try removing it to see if it helps. Monitor the Java heap size using JCOnsole/JMX.

What does the file discriptor count do? How to set it right? I couldn’t find the max descriptor count settings in the tuning guide.

i`ll remove the GC settings and let wowza restart.

I have another question, that could be related to this. We are busy with a new encoder, but sometimes strange things are happening, and we are not sure of this is the encoder that can cause these errors, or it’s java with memory issues (or the encoder creates issues so java/wowza crashes). This is the case; it seems that the encoder sometimes just stops with publishing the stream. When taking a look in the error log;

Like I said, i`m not sure if the encoder stops because java/wowza is crashing, or that java/wowza crashes, due to encoder issues. Hope you guys can give me a clue?

I still have problems with java that is crashing. Currently, i`m still having issues with java;

top (linux), shows:

17428 root 20 0 3625m 2.3g 4280 S 100 58.9 296:43.63 java

So I got a 100% CPU load and a memory use of 2.3GB of the total reserved 3500MB. So I think I got two issues;

A) CPU hangs @ 100%

B) Java does not return it’s used memory (I got 0 connections atm).

Any clue?

I guess it could be a custom module that we use. We have to figure that out. Another question (and keep out the knowledge that we use a custom module);

Currently, we have three publishers, and two viewers. The streams are 700kbit/s.

With top, I can see that java is using 1,5GB of the 3500MB.

What would be the expected usage of RAM, when only having three publishers and two viewers (700kbit each), and no use of any custom modules?

Can I calculate the expected usage of RAM by java with a certain amount publishers/viewers?

OK, we will try the JConsole.

But still, can you give me an indication of expected memory usage with 3 publishers and 2 viewers @ 700kbit?
