Wowza Community

Hardware minimum specifications

I want to stream 3 live channels.

Input:

  • 3 x HD 1080i, 25 fps, 12 mbps, mpeg-4 or

  • 2 x HD 1080i, 25 fps + 1 x PAL (768x576, 25fps, interlaced), mpeg-4

Output:

  • 3 x HD 1080p, 25 fps,

  • each channel in several qualities: 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, 12 mbps.

  • Average quality could be 4-8 mbps per channel

  • Number viewers: 100-1000

We consider using a HP DL380 G7 rackserver with:

  • 2 x Intel Xeon Six Core X5670 (2.93 GHz). 12 Cores in total

  • 64 GB RAM

  • 3 x 1.2 TB GB SAS (2½") 10K Hotswap HDD

  • Smart Array P410i with 512 MB RAM (RAID 0,1,5,10)

  • 4 x 1 Gigabit Ethernet. Or maybe 3 x 1 Gigabit + 1 x 10 Gigabit when more than 3 Gigabit is required, for example when more than 375 viewers with 8 mbps.

My questions:

  • It is recommended to use 3.00 GHz and 2 x 4 Cores. Is it possible to use 2.93 GHz when 12 Cores ? Or asked in another way: can the 12 cores compensate for going below 3.00 GHz as recommended ?

  • How much harddisc is required when only live streaming and transcoding live channels ?

  • Is Wowza able to live upscale 1080i to 1080p ?

Hello

Thanks for contacting the Wowza Community!

The minimum requirements for Wowza can be found HERE

I would make sure to at least meet the minimum requirements. Here are some transcoder benchmarks you can read up on and also help you make decisions:

Transcoder Benchmark

The transcoder benchmark can really help you.

On disk space, that is really up to you. How much archiving do you expect to be doing? If no archiving will be done, then a couple GBs or 1TB is enough for you.

Regarding upscaling, you can setup a transcoding profile to upscale to 1080p.

Hope this helps. If you have further questions, feel free to contact us.
