I need to automatically truncate DVR recordings on our server each night. Can I accomplish that by just deleting the files in the recording saves directory?

The best route would be to set the archive method to DELETE. This would allow nDVR to manage the recorded files for you.
Manually deleting the recordings can cause playback issues.
