I can’t get anything but the message “Wowza Streaming Engine 4 Trial Edition (Expires: feb 11, 2019) 4.7.7 build20181108145350” when I try to play the sample file in my web browser: “http://[my IP]:1935/vod/mp4:sample.mp4”.

Do not put a streaming media URL into a browser bar. You must use a player.

Your URL is close but not quite. It should look like this for Apple HLS playback.
