Teradek Cube - What's your experience?

I ask because I’ve had my 155/355 Cubelet for almost 30 days now and I’m not happy.

The operational range in Infrastructure Mode has been dismal. I can barely get more than 50 ft away from my AP or router (I tried both). Add obstructions and it gets worse. The picture freezes or distorts. At that range there’s not point in going wireless.

I ran several tests/configurations and I can’t get better results.

My router is a TL-WDR4300

My AP is a Engenius ENH900EXT

Both very good products

Then I decided to do a side-by-side test just using the Cube 155 and my Minicaster SDI encoder. Both wireless.

The Cube performed terribly where my Minicaster worked without issues.

I’ve read nothing but good things about the Cube so I’m not sure what’s going on. They seem very finicky.

I’m about to call Teradek and exercise my 30 money-back guarantee. I’d rather spend my $3500 another camera!

I just realized that I initially posted this in the wrong forum. I’m reposting here.

Hi MarcheLive,

Have you written to Support yet? They can help you diagnose what the problem may be: support@teradek.com

BTW, what bit rate and protocol are you using?

-Mike

Hi Mike,

I sent an email to support early on Friday. On Sunday I submitted a separate request via their website. I’m still waiting for a response.

I’m using a 1.5 bit rate and tried all available protocols. At one point I gave up entirely on wireless and wired the 155 directly into my router. I then sent a rtmp stream to Wowza. The stream quality was little better than a cell phone. Not something my clients would except.

Update: I spoke to Teradek Support. They say there must be a problem with the Cube as it should work fine under the circumstances. Oh well, I was issued a reference number to return the Cubelet.

I also learned that a Teradek Bolt would be a better option for my needs. With it I can stream 1080 with zero latency. The latency was not an issue which is why I went with the Cube. I figured, why pay more for a Bolt when I can get a Cube and get wireless and encoding. Turns out the wireless feature of the Cube is not good for higher resolutions. Not sure why the option is even in the Cube if it can’t handle it.
