Live Stream Repearter vs. Stream Target

Greetings,

I have been looking at different options to send live streams between an origin server and several edge servers (not a CDN) I have tested both the Live Stream Repeater Stream Target options in Wowza SE. The questions I have are: 1. what are the differences between the two options and 2. Which is the “better” option?

Thanks,

Hello

Thanks for contacting Wowza Forums!

Live Repeater Info: Live stream repeater is an origin/edge configuration for delivering a single live stream across a multiple-server deployment to many viewers

Stream Target Info: The Stream Targets feature in Wowza Streaming Engine™ live streaming software (version 4.2.0 and later) allows you to send live streams to destinations such as content delivery networks (CDNs) and services over a variety of protocols

For your edge/origin setup, Live Repeater is your best option.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Jermaine

Thanks for the reply and the useful information.

I do have one additional question since the Live Repeater option is best for live origin/edge server configuration. Does Live Repeater function like multicast does/did; a one to many stream using a single stream to reduce bandwidth from the origin server?

Thanks…

Hello ebandu,

That is correct, the edge server establishes one connection to the origin, and any clients that connect to the edge do not have a direct connection to the origin.

Alex

Thanks for the information I do have an additional questions.

Can I use Live Repeater option send a stream to a multicast enable network router?

Or to a Media publishing point, player or Wowza application?

Basically I am looking for a multicast solution for an intranet.
