Best performance: Windows Server 2008 or Linux?

Hi there,

I have this scenario for a client: 200/400 users online on Wowza with 15000 files on the disk.

Which environment would be better?

Windows Server 2008 or Linux Centos 5.0 ?

And about the storage?

I was thinking in put 3 x 300GB SCSI 15K RPM on RAID 5

it’s better?

Or could I use a 2TB SATA hd?

Thank you

I don’t think that one is better then the other for this purpose: “Windows Server 2008 or Linux Centos 5.0”

What matters most is max concurrent users and video bitrate. How many files doesn’t matter, except that it might indicate that the users are playing many different videos, which puts more strain on the disk i/o than the same number of users streaming the same bitrate but with less variety.

If you have 8 - 16 gigs of ram, and a 64bit OS, and 64bit Java, and the server is well tuned, then the limiting factor is usually network bandwidth. But 1gbs nic can handle 400 connections streaming 1mbs or less each.

Also see the tuning guide:

And you can get a load testing tool by sending request to test@wowza.com

We have not done extensive testing to know.

Ok, one more question that now came to my mind.

this particular application have 15000 video files on the same folder.

Which filesystem would give a better performance on this situation?

any idea?

thank you

CentOS 5 64-bit with 3 x 300GB will be a better choice.
