Format a USB drive to FAT32 and use it to configure a Wowza ClearCaster

There are several instances when you may need to use a FAT32-formatted USB flash drive to (re)configure your Wowza ClearCaster. This article describes how to format the USB flash drive.

Note: Instructions for using your FAT32-formatted USB flash drive to configure your Wowza ClearCaster device vary by situation and will be provided with your USB file.

Format a USB flash drive in Windows or Linux


We recommend using a tool called Rufus to format USB flash drives in Microsoft Windows or Linux.

  1. Download and install Rufus on your Windows or Linux machine.
  2. Insert your USB drive into the Windows or Linux computer.
  3. In Rufus, configure the following and then click Start:
    • Set the Boot selection to Non bootable.
    • Set the Partition scheme to MBR.
    • Set the File system to FAT32.
    • Select the Quick format checkbox.
  4. After the formatting is complete, copy the file provided by Wowza Media Systems into the root of the USB drive.
    Important! You must not change the name of the file in any way. For example, if you're using the Wowza ClearCaster network configuration tool, the file name will be and must remain clearcaster-remoteaccess.tgz.signed.
  5. Insert the USB flash drive into a running ClearCaster device and follow the instructions provided with the USB file.
  6. After your settings are applied, remove the USB flash drive and restart the Wowza ClearCaster device.

Format a USB flash drive in OS X


To format a USB flash drive in Apple OS X, you must use the disk utility.

  1. Insert your USB drive into the OS X computer.
  2. Open the Disk Utilities (/Application/Utilities/Disk Utility).
  3. In the Disk Utility, select your USB flash drive and then click Erase.
  4. When prompted, set the Format to MS-DOS(FAT32) and then click Erase.
  5. After the formatting is complete, copy the file provided by Wowza Media Systems into the root of the USB drive.
    Important! You must not change the name of the file in any way. For example, if you're using the Wowza ClearCaster network configuration tool, the file name will be and must remain clearcaster-remoteaccess.tgz.signed.
  6. Insert the USB flash drive into a running ClearCaster device and follow the instructions provided with the USB file.
  7. After your settings are applied, remove the USB flash drive and restart the Wowza ClearCaster device.
