• Wowza Streaming Engine for Amazon EC2 AMIs

Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) is a cloud-computing platform that virtualizes computing resources as virtual machines. A single virtual machine configuration is registered as an item called an Amazon Machine Image (AMI). This article describes the different ways to license Wowza Streaming Engine™ pre-built AMIs. We recommend that you purchase an AWS Marketplace Software Subscription to launch a pre-built Wowza Streaming Engine AMI into the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Management Console. Wowza Media Systems™ also provides Legacy Pre-Built AMIs that you can launch and configure in the AWS Management Console.

Note: The latest public AMIs are pre-configured with Wowza Streaming Engine software version 4.5.0 build 18676 released on June 23, 2016. See the Wowza Streaming Engine 4.5.0 Release Notes.

    AWS Marketplace Software Subscriptions

The AWS Marketplace options offer streamlined methods for configuring and launching your EC2 instance, and use current generation instance types and hardware virtual machine (HVM) virtualization for better performance. For more information about the AWS Marketplace software subscription options, see Media Streaming on Amazon Web Services (AWS). To learn how to use a Marketplace subscription to launch a Wowza Streaming Engine for EC2 instance and stream your first video, see the Wowza Streaming Engine for Amazon EC2: Quick Start Guide.

Option 1: AWS Marketplace - Wowza Streaming Engine 4: BYOL Pro Edition (HVM)

If you already have a Monthly or Perpetual license for Wowza Streaming Engine software (or plan to purchase one), use this "Bring Your Own License" software subscription. Pro Edition versions of these licenses, which enable unlimited use of the Transcoder (for 64-bit instances only), nDVR, and DRM features in the Wowza Streaming Engine software, are fully supported. Amazon will send you a monthly invoice for your running instance time, storage, and bandwidth consumption. If you use a Monthly license key with this subscription, you'll also get a monthly invoice from Wowza for usage of the Wowza Streaming Engine software.

Option 2: AWS Marketplace - Wowza Streaming Engine 4: Pro Edition (HVM)

This software subscription enables you to purchase a Wowza Streaming Engine AMI that has a Pro Edition license for the Wowza Streaming Engine software. The embedded Pro Edition license enables unlimited use of the Transcoder (for 64-bit instances only), nDVR, and DRM features in the Wowza Streaming Engine software. This option provides the convenience of a combined monthly invoice from Amazon for running instance time, storage, bandwidth consumption, and Wowza Streaming Engine software usage.

    Legacy Pre-Built AMIs

Wowza Media Systems provides two collections of pre-built AMIs, which are based on legacy LicKey and DevPay licensing model options. These options use the previous generation instance types and paravirtual (PV) virtualization technology. You can click an AMI ID for a region in one of the licensing model tables below to automatically launch and configure a Wowza Streaming Engine for EC2 instance in AWS Management Console. For details about how to configure the instance in the AWS Console, see the Wowza Streaming Engine for Amazon EC2 User's Guide.

    Notes:
    • We recommend that you purchase an AWS Marketplace software subscription to launch a Wowza Streaming Engine AMI into the AWS Management Console. AWS Marketplace offers streamlined methods for configuring and launching your EC2 instance, provides the current generation instance types, and uses the latest virtualization technology (HVM) for better performance.

    • Wowza also provides pre-built AMIs that are pre-configured with earlier versions of the Wowza Streaming Engine software. See the AMI Archive.

Option 3: Wowza Streaming Engine 4 Bring Your Own License (LicKey) Licensing

The legacy LicKey licensing option enables you to add your regular subscription or perpetual license key for Wowza Streaming Engine software when you configure your instance details in the console. This option provides access to all Wowza Streaming Engine functionality and the Transcoder (for 64-bit instances only), nDVR, and DRM features.

Amazon will send you a monthly invoice for your running instance time, storage, and bandwidth consumption. If you license the Wowza Streaming Engine software with a subscription license key, you'll also get a monthly invoice from Wowza for usage of the Wowza Streaming Engine software.

Note: To take advantage of the ease-of-use and benefits provided by AWS Marketplace, we recommend that you use your Wowza Streaming Engine software license with an AWS Marketplace - Wowza Streaming Engine 4: BYOL Pro Edition (HVM) software subscription.

Note: Transcoder is only available when using the LicKey licensing option on a 64-bit AMI. Also, be sure that you have a license key supports the Transcoder feature.

Option 4: Wowza Streaming Engine 4 DevPay Licensing

The legacy DevPay License option enables you to use a Wowza Streaming Engine software license that's embedded in a pre-built Amazon DevPay AMI (a separate license isn't needed). This option provides the convenience of a combined monthly invoice from Amazon for running instance time, bandwidth consumption, and Wowza Streaming Engine usage; however, it DOES NOT allow usage of the Transcoder, nDVR, and DRM features.

    Notes:
    • To get unlimited usage of Transcoder, nDVR, and DRM, and to take advantage of the ease-of-use and benefits provided by AWS Marketplace, we recommend that you purchase an AWS Marketplace - Wowza Streaming Engine 4: Pro Edition (HVM) software subscription.

    • If you're signed-in to the AWS Console, clicking an AMI ID will launch the associated Wowza Streaming Engine for EC2 instance in the selected region and the Choose an Instance Type page will be displayed with the m3.medium instance type selected by default. Our pre-built DevPay AMIs don't support this instance type, so you must choose another supported instance type in the Choose an Instance Type page in the AWS Console. Refer to the table below to choose a supported instance type for your EC2 region.
