Hardware Requirements

Hello!

I currently have Wowza running on a cloud server with 2vCPUs, 1GB RAM w/ Windows 2008. Works perfectly.

I have this server because i was running IIS Smooth Streaming before i knew Wowza, but now i have only Wowza running and plan moving to Linux, to lower costs.

So my doubt is the hardware needed to run Wowza in Linux. It will be only the streaming server and no other applications on the server. I use RTMP for Flash, Android, BBerry and iOS devices. My current usage is 200 simultaneous clients.

The cheapest server i found here in Brazil have 1 vCPU 800MHz and 512mb of memory. Considering that Linux uses much less resources than Windows, i think it can work. Will it? Need more mem?

Sorry for the English, need more practice.

Thanks in advance

Hola Edipo,

That’s probably an Atom CPU? Not very powerful. It’s not going to allow you to grow in capacity very much.

But, since you are only doing 200 streams you will probably be ok.

You should test before going live with the load test tool: https://www.wowza.com/docs/how-to-get-flash-rtmp-load-test-tool

You might also consider Amazon EC2. There is a free tier. You’ll only need to pay a little extra for bandwidth. http://aws.amazon.com/free/

You will need 1gbs bandwidth. We recommend late model quad or dual quad cpu, 4g - 8g ram, and 64bit OS and Java/JDK

Tomek,

There is this load test tool that will help you see what the server and its network can actually handle:

Make sure your server is properly tuned:

Hi

I have one questions.

For 100 Mb/s bandwidth from my ISP I must adjust server. I will be streaming 500-1024 Kb/s live material. With variant will be better. Price is important.

  1. Atom 1,6 GHz 2 core and 2 thread, 4 GB RAM

  2. Intel I3 3,4 GHz 2 core and 2 thread, 8 GB RAM

Sorry for my english and thanks for reply.

I have Intel Xeon 4x2,66GHz and 24GB RAM. When is 200 concurrent connections CPU has 6% load. I don’t need more so I think to change server for smaller with 100Mb NIC and I3 or Atom processor. I want to make something like this. First server with 100Mb NIC for 120 viewers. Ocasinally (one time for week) when viewers will be more I start second server with 1Gb NIC. Loadbalancer, Apache, Wowza wil be start on I3 2x3,4GHz and 8GB RAM and 100Mb NIC (or Atom 2x1,6Ghz 4GB RAM if will cope). Do I have right? Will be works?

Sorry for my english and thanks for reply.
