    Smile Scaling Wowza on EC2 (session persistance)

    Hello Wowzers,

    We are building a large video site which uses Shared Object to synchronize the state of all our Flash clients. Now we hope this site will get hit with a lot of traffic so we want to setup a 2 machine cluster. The question is How do I setup the cluster such that the user session (or the shared objects) are sticky/persistant to the corresponding machine? Is this done by default, since the connection is RTMP and therefore persistant?

    Yes they are there by default because the connection is persistent.
    However, if you have a connection and for whatever reason the client disconnects then tries to reconnect the load balancer (if you are using one) may send them to a different machine and this will be a different shared object and so you will have to make sure that you have synchronisation between all the servers.

    Some developers use a dedicated shared object server to accomplish this. Use liverepeater or mediacache edge servers to scale content delivery, but use a dedicated server for shared object functions. The Flash client will have two netconnections.

    @Jason so do you know if Wowza uses some type of built in session replication mechanism, maybe something like J2EE clusters do it?

    @rrlanham Understood. What if I wanted to support more than 2000 concurrent clients? From reading this forum I think that seems to be the max of client connections that a single instance of wowza server can handle (at least using SO from Flash to sync state).
    What setup do you recommend?

    A dedicated SharedObject server could handle many thousands to tens of thousand of clients, depending on server resources and network access.
