Thread: quicktime on mac streaming from wowza 3.0.3 repeatedly hangs up on me

    Default quicktime on mac streaming from wowza 3.0.3 repeatedly hangs up on me

    I have a cupertino VOD stream that I'm trying to watch via quicktime and at some point while watching the video that is playing stops and is replaced by with

    https://s3.amazonaws.com/fandor-tmp/nowplaying.jpg

    There isn't anything notable in the access log (I've turned on debugging).

    I have no idea if it is related, but I'm also getting some odd behavior while watching the same stream on an ipad (in MPMoviePlayer) that occasionally the stream just pauses by itself.

    help...

    Hi
    I think that this sounds like a bandwidth issue.
    I'm afraid this isn't easy to test but you could try,
    http://www.speedtest.net and see what your results are.

    How would a fluctuating bandwidth make the VOD stream suddenly become a "Live Broadcast"?

    It just looks like a placeholder with label "Live Broadcast", which is not acccurate obviously. The first thing I would suspect, also, is a bitrate issue. Test with bitrate cut in half and see if that make a difference.

    And/or there is something unusual about the key frame frequency in this file. You can add this Property to the /conf/[app-name]/Application.xml /HTTPStreamers /Properties list:
    <Property>
    	<Name>cupertinoChunkDurationTarget</Name>
    	<Value>10000</Value>
    	<Type>Integer</Type>
    </Property>
    You can use ffmpeg to get the info you need to adjust cupertinoChunkDurationTarget
    ffmpeg -i yourfile.mp4
    Look for the fps and tbc numbers. For example, the Wowza sample.mp4 file has

    24 fps,..., 48 tbc
    tbc/fbs = key frame frequency in seconds * 1000 = milliseconds.

    You want chunkDurationTarget to be a multiple of key frame frequency in milliseconds, as explained here:
    http://www.wowza.com/forums/content....arameters-(iOS)

    ok, I'll investigate. So your theory is that the client ends up hanging at some point (because of poor bandwidth) and then doesn't restart?

    It turns out that there are two different sets of encodes we have, one with a key frame interval of 3 seconds, one with a key frame interval of 9 seconds. What happens if chunkDurationTarget is not a multiple of the keyframe interval? Does it round up to the next multiple?

    If you make chunkDurationTarget 9000 it should work for both.

    hmm, could you explain this m3u8 file that I see then? I would assume that the EXT-X-TARGETDURATION should be either a multiple of the keyframe or the chunkDurationTarget that I set (to 9000).

    it is still broken. I changed to 9000 but it is still a problem. But I still have the same behavior, do you have any other suggestions?

    Is it just the one with 9 second key frame frequency?

    Can you re-encode it?
