Thread: Not valid stream name error

  1. #1

    Default Not valid stream name error

    I'm getting some errors in my log about streams name errors. The base file is there (with a .mp4 extension). This is an intermittant problem. Any pointers on how to debug?

    Hi Dan,

    Shouldn't this:
    1630_our_lady_of_the_sphere_480_800_FILM_v7

    Be this:
    1630_our_lady_of_the_sphere_480_800_FILM_v7.mp4

    How are you generating the stream name? Perhaps there is something in your code that is omitting the .mp4 extension?

    Default

    we've been omitting the extension for quite a while and it usually works fine, it just occasionally breaks. These streams are served up via cupertino streaming, and the smil file is:
    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <smil>
      <head/>
      <body>
        <switch>
          <video system-bitrate="2756608" src="mp4:1630_our_lady_of_the_sphere_720_2500_FILM_v7" width="720"/>
          <video system-bitrate="1835008" src="mp4:1630_our_lady_of_the_sphere_720_1600_FILM_v7" width="720"/>
          <video system-bitrate="1220608" src="mp4:1630_our_lady_of_the_sphere_720_1000_FILM_v7" width="720"/>
          <video system-bitrate="1015808" src="mp4:1630_our_lady_of_the_sphere_480_800_FILM_v7" width="480"/>
          <video system-bitrate="503808" src="mp4:1630_our_lady_of_the_sphere_480_300_FILM_v7" width="480"/>
          <video system-bitrate="1015808" src="mp4:1630_our_lady_of_the_sphere_360_800_FILM_v7" width="360"/>
          <video system-bitrate="503808" src="mp4:1630_our_lady_of_the_sphere_360_300_FILM_v7" width="360"/>
        </switch>
      </body>
    </smil>

    Do you believe that those files should be mp4:FILE.mp4 instead of mp4:FILE????

    You're right, you can omit the extension. Personally, I would use the whole filename just for clarity, if nothing else.

    But, that's probably not the issue. Shamrock suggested that having two lines in your smil with the same bitrate could be the source of the issue. You should try re-encoding at different bitrates and changing your smil accordingly, or just try removing the two duplicate bitrate lines.

    Are you seeing that users are not able to play the stream via the smil when the WARN msg occurs?

    we've had various customer complaints about movies not playing (including one that happened yesterday where we saw this warning in the log).

    Were you able to try again after removing the duplicate bitrates (or re-encoding one of those streams) and updating the SMIL file?

    got rid of duplicate bitrates and added extension to the file, but it is still happening (not always, but frequently):

    Please post your new .smil.

    I notice your .smil is a little bit different than the one listed in the VOD tutorial. The client requests the streams. Maybe certain clients are not parsing your .smil file.

    Here's the smil

    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <smil>
      <head/>
      <body>
        <switch>
          <video system-bitrate="2756608" src="mp4:293_lovecraft_fear_of_the_unknown_720_2500_FILM_v5.mp4" width="720"/>
          <video system-bitrate="1835008" src="mp4:293_lovecraft_fear_of_the_unknown_720_1600_FILM_v5.mp4" width="720"/>
          <video system-bitrate="1220608" src="mp4:293_lovecraft_fear_of_the_unknown_720_1000_FILM_v5.mp4" width="720"/>
          <video system-bitrate="1015808" src="mp4:293_lovecraft_fear_of_the_unknown_480_800_FILM_v5.mp4" width="480"/>
          <video system-bitrate="503808" src="mp4:293_lovecraft_fear_of_the_unknown_480_300_FILM_v5.mp4" width="480"/>
        </switch>
      </body>
    </smil>
    I'm pretty sure that it isn't a client issue because most of the time the error doesn't occur. The primary client doing this is Roku.

    Hi Dan,

    I have some more suggestions.

    1. Ensure you can play each stream directly in the SimpleVideoStreaming example: rtmp://[host]/new-fandor/_definst_/mp4:2/293/293_lovecraft_fear_of_the_unknown_720_1600_FILM_v5 .mp4

    2. Try removing all the width statements from your smil. They are not needed.

    3. Change this:

    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <smil>
      <head/>
    To this:

    <smil>
      <head>
      </head>
