    Default Stream remote playlist and videos

    Hello,

    I'd like to use Wowza for live streaming to various devices (iPhone, Flash etc.). The content is stored in MP4 files and grouped in SMIL playlists. The problem is that both playlist and videos are placed in remote locations and are accessible via HTTP only (videos are also accessible via RTMP). Can I use Wowza for that? I noticed some threads about Media Cache. Would it be an option here?

    BTW, SMIL playlist is placed under a single URL and it changes from time to time. It contains URLs to MP4 files in either HTTP or RTMP protocol format (I can choose one).

    Thanks,
    Piotr

    Piotr,

    Yes, MediaCache is used to scale vod delivery, and it can use a web server as the origin or content server.

    You will place the smil file alongside the content it refers to, in the same web folder. The smil file will be unchanged if it was moved from a content folder alongside the same content.

    I'm not sure if I understood. Let's say that SMIL's URL is:

    http://mywebsite.com/playlists/playlist.smil

    and the SMIL itself looks like that:

    <smil>
    <head>
    </head>
    <body>
    <switch>
    <video src="mp4:myvideo.mp4" system-bitrate="800000"/>
    </switch>
    </body>
    </smil>

    and now you're saying that video should be available under URL:

    http://mywebsite.com/playlists/myvideo.mp4

    Am I correct? Is it not possible to use absolute URLs inside SMIL? Like:

    <smil>
    <head>
    </head>
    <body>
    <switch>
    <video src="mp4:http://mywebsite.com/videos/myvideo.mp4" system-bitrate="800000"/>
    </switch>
    </body>
    </smil>

    The smil should be identical to what it was

    <video src="mp4:myvideo.mp4" system-bitrate="800000"/>
    Then the IPhone URL is
    http://[wowza-address]:1935/MediaCache/smil:yourSmil.smil/playlist.m3u8

    Hey Richard

    Is it possible to have "remote" smil not hosted on wowza. I am generating the smil as a web service from one of my application
    http://{mywebsite}/service/smil/assetid/{assetid}/type/{iPad}/{uniqueid}.smil

    Hello,

    This scenario may be possible by defining this location as a Media
    Cache source

    Wowza Media Server™ 3.6.4 users can get the MediaCache AddOn by completing the AddOn Request form. After your license has been verified, within three business days, you'll receive an email with download instructions.
