Question VLC, Wowza and HTTP protocol

Hi, I'm new with Wowza, and installed the Wowza Media Server 3 Trial Edition on a 64bits Gentoo Linux plataform.

I have a computer where is a linux running and VLC player installed. I'm trying to play a video using HTTP protocol and VLC player and I can't, the command line I use is:

    # vlc -vvv http://[server_address]:[port]/vod/sample.mp4

and here is the log of the VLC player:

[0xb700068c] main input debug: `http://[server_address]:[port]/vod/sample.mp4' successfully opened
[0xb5d013f4] ps demux warning: garbage at input, trying to resync...
[0xb700068c] main input debug: EOF reached

I know that VLC works fine with the RTMP protocol ( # vlc -vvv rtmp://[server_address]:[port]/vod/sample.mp4) but I need to use only the HTTP protocol.

Is it possibly to use VLC and HTTP protocol with Wowza server?

    Thanks

    Hi dariolb,

The stream URI you are using is incorrect. See the Quick Start Guide for info on how to build a valid stream URI for the various technologies. Also, I don't think VLC supports the 3 live HTTP stream types Wowza can serve. (It might do Cupertino but I don't think it can do Flash HTTP or Silverlight) The URI you are trying is probably for progressive download from a webserver.

OK, thanks for your help. Just one more question:

Can I use wget (or similiar) via HTTP protocol to transfer a video from the 'content' folder of Wowza Server? I know that using a Webserver may be a better idea, but I need to confirm if I can do it this way.

    Thanks again.

You can use wget for that on a Wowza server.

Hi Richard, thanks for your help, but I was reading another threads when I found this one (http://www.wowza.com/forums/showthre...2019#post92019) where you said that 'wget will not work with Wowza'

If I can use wget, is there any article or doc with examples of the use of wget to get a file from Wowza server? If not, I will try with a web server and map the content folder as a web folder.

    Thanks

wget installed on the same server as Wowza can be used to get files from other locations and save them to the Wowza server. I do this on EC2 servers all the time. I think that article was using wget to get files from a Wowza server.
