Thread: Random tcp port listening when running Wowza

    Default Random tcp port listening when running Wowza

    Hello. Why is wowza listening to a random tcp port when running ? I see the initial license checking traffic, which then disappears, but there is an open port:

    lsof -i | grep java

    Wowza is only responsible for 1935 and 8086, which are the /Port values in the two active HostPorts in that VHost.

    Unless you have multiple VHosts and one or more other VHost.xml files that define that 36464 and 5758, then there must be another process that is running Java that is binding to those ports. It's not Wowza from what I can see. The startup lines in the Wowza access log, which you see when Wowza re-starts also show what ports Wowza binds to.

    The thing is, whenever i restart Wowza, the open port changes; and when stopping Wowza, all java open ports disappear. Could the Java runtime be actually opening some port ?

    As you can see in the lsof -i output, the pid is the same as Wowza's.

    If i understand correctly, it may be wise to take a look at how puppett fixed this:

    Apparently the Ubuntu openjdk enables the JMX network connector by default, resulting in this open port ?

    To reproduce the issue, just install Wowza on Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS 64 bits with openjdk-6-jre-headless.

    I don't know. I will ask around and let you know what I find out. I assume it is Java and/or Linux related, but I'm not sure.
