Default Wowza server in AWS/Cloudfront HLS stream to VLC player not working

I am very new to all of this so my apologies if I am asking something obvious.

I have a Wowza server running in a Cloudformation stack on an EC2 instance.
I am successfully feeding video in from an encoder running on my desktop and
viewing that video using the test page at
    http://www.wowza.com/resources/3.6.0...er/player.html

    All of that is good.

Now I would like to also view the video using VLC (version 2.1.0) . But when I load the PlaybackHLSURL from the
Stack Outputs on AWS into my VLC player, I get nothing.

My first question is, should this work? Are HLS streams from Wowza playable in VLC?
(I'm also going to ask the same question of the VLC folks)

Second question, can I use the HDS stream and the HLS stream at the same time?

    Default

In latter versions of VLC you should be able to play it back. Also, you should be able to play back using both HDS & HLS as needed.
