Setting up Wowza for HLS chunking and streaming

I am evaluating the Wowza server for our OTT service. We would like to use the Wowza server to transcode our source video into multiple .mp4 files, each with a different video profile and bit rate. We also need to transcode the source video into HLS chunks, also at multiple profiles and bit rates for ABR streaming over HLS.

Our video is not live but is pre-encoded into .mov files and stored in the content directory (at least that’s where we’re storing it for our evaluation purposes).

My problem is that I cannot work out how to make the Wowza server generate and deliver the HLS streams. I have followed the QuickStart guide and the AddOn_UserGuide to set up my application, but making any request for a HLS stream creates a “MediaList is empty” error on the server.

Here are the various details:

With these .xml file I start the server and then try to access a HLS stream. For first testing, I use wget

So what am I doing wrong here?

Hi,

If the transcoded streams have an audio or video codec that is not recognised then the Stream Name Group is not created. You should see a entry in the logs if the Stream Name Group is created or not.

I see from your template that you are passing through the audio so if that is not AAC or MP3 then it will cause the problem.

You will also get the same problem if the transcoder has not started yet.

Roger.

Hi,

From what I can tell it seems as though you are trying to stream from a static file rather than a live stream. The Transcoder works on live streams only.

You can actually make a file, or set of files, stream as though as though playing live, but there are extra steps necessary to do this.

This is actually one way of doing that.

Also some live encoders, such as Wirecast, can open and stream a file to Wowza as though it is a live stream as well.

Here’s a good guide to follow for that workflow.

If you need to record to files then you can set StreamType in your Application.xml to live-record

or use the LiveStreamRecord function built into Wowza detailed.

Daren

Hi,

The Transcoder AddOn provides the ability to ingest a live stream, decode the video and audio, and then re-encode the stream to suit the desired playback devices. - See more here.

It does NOT act directly on static content files (convert media files) for vod playback. We are looking to provide this functionality in a future Wowza release (we demo’d this at a previous NAB show) but there is currently no time frame for it’s availability.

The workflow mentioned in my previous post above is one way that this can be achieved at present.

video file->live stream scheduler->live stream->Transcoder AddOn->Transcoded Live Stream(s)->Stream(s) recorded to vod file(s)

Though obviously it is very cumbersome.

Best regards,

Daren

It looks like the URL I wrote in the message was clipped in the formatting. It was

http://192.168.10.124:1935/p/ngrp:sample.mp4_tv/playlist.m3u8

So I’m using the sample.mp4 file that was part of the Wowza distribution package, which looks like it has aac audio.

Anyway, I made the changes to the transcoder template file:

AAC

96000

and tried again, but still get the same results.

The only error I can see in the log is “MediaList is empty”, but if there’s something else you suspect I should see then please let me know and I’ll grep for it.

Daren, thank you for your reply. Maybe I have misunderstood the functionality of the Wowza server.

What we are looking for is a system that can take our origin video files, transcode them to multiple profiles for web delivery and for ABR delivery, and stream the files on demand. Does the Wowza server do that? If so, which sample and/or documentation should I be looking at?
