    Default Long delay when playing live stream on iOS devices using SMIL file

    Hi, we are using EC2 Wowza box to stream a live stream. It works fine when used with our web site with jwplayer, configured to go to different streams for different bitrates. But when an iOS device plays the stream via a SMIL file, it takes over 30 seconds for the application to actually connect to the stream and after that the video is delayed by the same amount from real-time. For jwplayer the delay is about 4 seconds.
    The SMIL file looks like this:
    <body>
    <switch>
    <video height="360" src="stream1c" width="640">
    <param name="videoBitrate" value="300000" valuetype="data"></param>
    <param name="audioBitrate" value="20000" valuetype="data"></param>
    </video>
    <video height="360" src="stream1b" width="640">
    <param name="videoBitrate" value="900000" valuetype="data"></param>
    <param name="audioBitrate" value="32000" valuetype="data"></param>
    </video>
    <video height="720" src="stream1a" width="1280">
    <param name="videoBitrate" value="1500000" valuetype="data"></param>
    <param name="audioBitrate" value="32000" valuetype="data"></param>
    </video>
    </switch>
    </body>

    Take a look at this article on cupertino packetizing. By encoding with low key frame frequency (1 - 2 seconds) and corresponding cupertinoChunkDurationTarget, you can reduce startup time and live stream latency in HLS streams.

    The server says: for Wowza Media Systems internal use only.
