Which Java should I install under OS X 10.9 (client)

I’m running 64 bit OS X 10.9 (client, not server). I’m trying to sort out which version of Java I should install. I will not be doing any Java development on this computer. thanks

In the Wowza java installation instructions, I go to:

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html

… click on Server JRE:

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/server-jre8-downloads-2133154.html

… but there are no OS X installers, just:

Linux x64 55.56 MB server-jre-8u5-linux-x64.tar.gz

Solaris SPARC 64-bit 66.13 MB server-jre-8u5-solaris-sparcv9.tar.gz

Solaris x64 63.79 MB server-jre-8u5-solaris-x64.tar.gz

Windows x64 52.28 MB server-jre-8u5-windows-x64.tar.gz

Clicking JRE takes me to:

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jre8-downloads-2133155.html

Java SE Runtime Environment 8 Downloads

… and has:

Mac OS X x64 56.61 MB jre-8u5-macosx-x64.dmg

Clicking JDK takes me to:

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk8-downloads-2133151.html

Java SE Development Kit 8 Downloads

… and has:

Mac OS X x64 207.79 MB jdk-8u5-macosx-x64.dmg

http://docs.oracle.com/javase/7/docs/webnotes/install/mac/mac-jdk.html#install

… but has no download link.

Mac

The installation of JRE and JDK of 7u6 or later require Mac OS X 10.7.3 (Lion) or later.

Mac OS X x64 207.79 MB jdk-8u5-macosx-x64.dmg

I just received direction, and will proceed:

I would try this:

Mac OS X x64 56.61 MB jre-8u5-macosx-x64.dmg

This is a 64-bit Mac OS X package, which suggests appropriate compatibility.

Mac OS X x64 207.79 MB jdk-8u5-macosx-x64.dmg

This looks like the jre, but includes development tool. Will likely serve the same function as the jre.

Hi,

Thanks for the update.

Hopefully this will help others with the same issue.

Regards,

Jason

This is being answered in support ticket #97373.

I installed jre-8u11-macosx-x64, and rebooted, but without success. I have a ticket on this, but thought I’d post here to in case anyone has run into this:

I did not do this: “To start Wowza Streaming Engine as a Mac OS X launchd service” I am using the start and stop standalone mode apps for now. When I ran the start standalone app, I got a dialog: “Click OK to start the standalone Wowza Streaming Engine. This will disable the services.” I clicked OK, and authenticated. Terminal output:

cd /Library/WowzaStreamingEngine/manager/bin;./startmgr.sh;exit

mele:~ admin$ cd /Library/WowzaStreamingEngine/manager/bin;./startmgr.sh;exit

No Java runtime present, requesting install.

logout

[Process completed]

Clicking “More Info…” took me to http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html .

Rebooted again. A dialog: “Software Update” reads: “To open “java”, you need a Java SE 6 runtime. Would you like to install one now?”

Reinstalled the (same) Java from Oracle. Tested on the Oracle web site; got: "Verified Java Version

Completion checkmark Congratulations! You have the recommended Java installed (Version 8 Update 11)."

Start Standalone Mode still does not work.

I suppose I could get the Java that Apple swupdate is pointing me to… (separate from the oracle site I just referred to)

Up and running now. In case anyone else runs into this:

I let the Apple Software Update process get the Java it wanted me to

have.

I tested at https://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp and got:

Congratulations!

You have the recommended Java installed (Version 8 Update 11).

Interestingly, that is the same version reported after I installed Java from the Oracle site.
