    Default live streaming quality + akamai DVR

    We use tricaster -> wowza -> akamai to live stream HLS video. Some but not all our customers are complaining that their live video is lower quality than what is expected from their high bandwidth internet connection. We have at times experienced this ourselves even with sufficient bandwidth.

    We use mediastreamvalidator to validate the akamai stream and find that each stream is pushing about 10-20% more bit rate than the target bitrate. Is it possible that when our customers' players cannot handle these higher bit rate they use lower bitrate streams and thus they see low quality video. This result is seen in both wowza 3.5 and 4.

    We would also like to know any tools/framework that people used to monitor wowza stream quality to akamai so that we may be notified of any potential problem.

    Also, when we configure akamai to record these live streams so that we can later use akamai DVR to playback the videos, we find that the video quality is not as good as what we can get from using ffmpeg to do encoding and then uploading the encoded videos to akamai. Is there anything that can be done to improve the video quality that akamai record from the wowza live stream?

    Hello,

    Are you pushing the RTMP stream or the Apple HLS stream from Wowza to Akamai?
    If you are pushing one RTMP stream from Wowza to Akamai, and you are using the Akamai servers to generate the Apple HLS streams, this means that Akamai is transcoding the Apple HLS output.

    You can also configure Wowza to push the Apple HLS stream directly to Akamai. Please take a look at the "How to push streams to CDNs and other services (Push Publishing)" forum article, explaining how to push the Apple HLS stream to Akamai.

    wowza is doing the transcoding from RTMP single stream to HLS multiple streams. I did not know that Akamai is capable of doing the transcoding

    Does this new information help you in answering my original question?

    Sorry for the confusion. We are actually pushing multiple rtmp streams to akamai.
