Need advice before starting to use Wowza

Hello,

We need to use Wowza Media Server for internal uses (Intranet)

We want to use it for approx 200 users connected on the local network.

Average bitrate used : 800 Kb (Audio + Video) H264

Format : H264 RTMP

Can you confirm that we can use 2 standalone servers (Windows) to host a Primary and Secondary (Failover) server ?

What do you advice to host 200 connections on a single server ? (Hardware : memory, CPU…)

Many thanks for your advices

Hello there,

Wowza recommends a late model quad or dual quad cpu, 4g - 8g ram, and 64bit OS and Java/JDK.

You can configure fail-over with Live Stream Repeater by adding a Secondary Origin URL to the edge sever:

How to configure a live stream repeater

(Optional) Enter a backup Wowza origin server URL in Secondary Origin URL. The secondary origin is for redundancy. If the primary origin server fails, clients may experience up to a 12-second timeout before failover to the backup origin server is completed. Use secondary origin only for failover purposes.

Kind regards,

Salvadore

Many thanks Salvadore !

Can you give me the approx max user for a Wowza Server with (Quad Core and 8 GB RAM / 64 bits) ?

Is the limit will be only the bandwith capacity ? or can we have a max user connected limitation ?

(for a 800 Kb bandwith stream)

Do you have advice for tuning network on the server ?

Many thanks

Yes, you can follow this guide for tuning the servers:

How to do performance tuning

And you can utilize this Load Test Tool:

How to get Flash RTMP Load Test Tool

With a 1g nic (20% overhead accounted for.) = 800mbs throughput, which is 800 1 mbs streams, or 1600 500kbs streams.

You can use this formula for calculating:

number of users * stream bitrate + 20% IP overhead = total server bandwidth

You will have to test your actual server/network using the load test tool, or monitoring utilization in production. You must be properly tuned. And to achieve maximum levels you may have to tune your server and network in other ways outside Wowza.

I hope this is helpful.
