Wowza Server HTTP Mime type for Flash

We have a Wowza server, Wowza Streaming Engine 4 Perpetual Edition 4.4.1 build17882, on a Red Hat Linux 6.8 server. According to our sysadmins, this Wowza server is set up to serve Flash over both RTMP and HTTP. We are trying to get JW Player to work with HTTP and have been unable to do so. With RTMP we have no problems at all – videos play just fine and have done so for well over a year. We are getting this error:

HTTP “Content-Type” of “text/html” is not supported. Load of media resource http://our-server/our-path/our-file.mp4 failed.

Error playing media: MediaError { code=4, …

To us (the development team) this looks like we are NOT getting Flash out on HTTP. Shouldn’t that come with a content type like “application/x-shockwave-flash”? We have been told that the server is configured correctly, so we want to check and see what people more knowledgeable in this area have to say. Is this a configuration issue for JW Player, or a problem the sysadmins have to resolve?

Hi,

It does seem to be a player/browser issue. I’d recommend testing HLS playback using the JWPlayer stream tester. Also a good test is to try playing back your HLS streams natively in Safari on OSX/iOS or natively in more recent Android OSs. If this still fails then please open a support ticket and we can take a closer look from a Wowza perspective.
