Wowza Ultra Low Latency Service FAQs

Q: What technology does Wowza use to achieve the stated latency at a large scale?

A: It combines: our own ultra low latency WOWZ streaming protocol; WebSockets technology; and a managed service built on the powerful cloud computing technology of Microsoft Azure.

Q: As a software company, how is Wowza able to build and manage a global, ultra low latency network and service?

A: Our Ultra Low Latency Service is built leveraging Microsoft Azure—one of the world's most powerful cloud infrastructures, with multiple, redundant data centers in 24 regions around the globe.

Q: Can I replace my current RTMP workflow with the Wowza Ultra Low Latency Service?

A: For workflows that require near–real time viewing of live events, yes. The Wowza Ultra Low Latency Service accepts RTMP sources for global delivery. Currently, the Ultra Low Latency Service doesn't deliver adaptive-bitrate streams, manage on-demand streams or support captions or ad insertion.

Q: What are common use cases for ultra low latency streaming?

A: Our ultra low latency streaming service is ideal for online gaming, auctions, security, live sports, social engagement, financial services and anything with a high degree of interactivity.

Q: Can iOS users produce and view streams over the Wowza Ultra Low Latency Service?

A: Yes. You can use the Wowza GoCoder mobile app to encode a live stream for the Ultra Low Latency Service, or easily create a custom application with the GoCoder SDK to broadcast an ultra low latency stream from any iOS or Android mobile device. In addition, the Wowza Ultra Low Latency Service delivers a tuned, lower-latency HLS stream for viewing on any device.

Q: Can I use my existing encoder with the Wowza Ultra Low Latency Service?

A: Any encoder that can connect to an RTMP server or that can provide an RTSP source for pull workflows can use the Wowza Ultra Low Latency Service.

Q: How do I use the Wowza Ultra Low Latency Service?

A: You can sign in to the Wowza Streaming Cloud service to manage account users, generate API keys and view ultra low latency usage and streaming statistics in a browser. To actually create, update, delete and manage ultra low latency streams, you must use the Wowza Streaming Cloud REST API.

Q: What players can I use with the Wowza Ultra Low Latency Service?

A: For the lowest latency end-to-end stream, the Wowza Player is the only player that currently supports viewing across all operating systems and browsers. However, the Wowza Ultra Low Latency Service also delivers a tuned, lower-latency HLS stream that can be used with other players.

Q: Can I stream VR and 360 experiences using the Wowza Ultra Low Latency Service?

A:  The Wowza ultra low latency network supports delivery of VR and 360 streams—however, Wowza Player doesn't currently support spatial rendering of 360 streaming. Players that do support 360 rendering can display the tuned, lower-latency HLS stream that the ultra low latency service delivers.

Q: Can I use the Wowza Ultra Low Latency Service to build large-scale video chat applications?

A: Yes, you can use the ultra low latency network to build video chat applications—but not as a single stream. A separate stream must be established for each viewer.

Q: Can I deliver adaptive bitrate streams using the Wowza Ultra Low Latency Service?

A: The Wowza Ultra Low Latency Service generates single-bitrate streams, but you can send multiple, parallel streams of different bitrates of a single event for viewers to select.
