Update from Wowza Media Server 2.1.x to Wowza Media Server 2.2.0 or greater

Dear Wowza Developers,

I am going to implement the ‘Adding Multi-bitrate Audio-only Rendition to iOS Streams (AppStore 64Kbps)’ feature in our system.

Now we have Wowza Media Server 2.1.2 on the origin linux server, and Wowza Media Server 2.2.4 on the edge linux server.

In order to get this feature to work I should have Wowza Media Server 2.2.0 or greater on the origin server.

I saw in the SOFTWARE UPDATES part, but as it is written there:

You can update from version 2.2.3.x to 2.2.4 by applying the following patch WowzaMediaServer2.2.3-patch15.zip (to apply a patch, download, unzip and follow the instructions in the README.txt file). You can update from an earlier version by uninstalling the older version, installing the latest version and re-making any configuration changes.

It seams to me really dangerous to uninstall the old version of the origin server, because the origin server is ‘online’ and the users are connecting to it all the time (24/7).

Could you please give me any advise?

Every answer will be highly appreciated!

In that situation I think the only practical way to have 0 downtime is setup new server on different machine, then change DNS. Hopefully you are using domain name to connect to Wowza

Also, you should have origin and edge be same version.

Thanks for the reply. I’ll try that way.
