At IBC 2026, Wowza CEO Krish Kumar and Lewis Smithingham, Principal Product Manager for NVIDIA’s Media2, discussed how modern video pipelines need to bake synthetic video detection into their processes in the AWS Theater. They built the case around broadcast, but the same conversation keeps coming up with the monitoring and surveillance teams I work with every day.
Most organizations have stopped asking whether they can detect synthetic video. They have started asking how to put detection inside an operation that runs 24/7, without a laborious rearchitecture project. If a synthetic clip gets past ingest, what does it actually cost, and who owns the outcome?
How Does Synthetic Video Content Get Into Production?
A fabricated clip of an incident that reaches an inbound social feed, while live news coverage is running, carries no provenance information, no C2PA Content Credentials, nothing that would let a producer verify it before airing. Competitors are already showing it. It arrives before the facts do, gathers momentum in minutes, and lands in front of a producer who has to choose between airing it, holding it, or labeling it. The producer has to make the call by eye, in seconds.
The newsroom absorbs the cost of the review. Editorial, legal, and communications teams spend days reconstructing how the clip entered the pipeline. Trust built over decades erodes faster than any single on-air correction can repair.
Monitoring and surveillance operations face the same problem. Video can reach a command center as a feed shared during a joint operation, a drone or helicopter video handed over mid-incident, or a clip attached to a claim or a report. The operator escalates it, but nobody questions the source because the volume of feeds far exceeds the number of people watching them.
The escalation propagates to partner organizations that have no independent way to check the footage, so one bad input becomes several bad decisions across agencies. Chain-of-custody and retention requirements, including the authentication standard in Federal Rule of Evidence 901, assume the record reflects what a camera captured. The video then enters the record as evidence, where its authenticity has to survive review and cross-examination.
Who Is Held Accountable For Flagging Synthetic Video?
If synthetic content is aired without the proper disclosures, liability lands on the producer who cleared the segment, the operator who escalated the feed, or the analyst who entered the footage into the record. Each of them made a judgment at ingest, and each of them needs to explain the reasoning afterward. Most organizations that ingest video from sources they do not control have assigned accountability for the decision without assigning ownership of the signal that informs it. A growing set of disclosure rules, including the EU AI Act’s Article 50, California SB 942, and New York’s S8420A, govern how AI-generated video must be labeled. Depending on the regulation, those obligations could sit with the video publisher, distributor, or generative AI provider. Meeting these requirements still depends on having a detection signal in the first place.
How Do Synthetic Video Detection Projects Get Past POC?
Most synthetic video detection projects stall at the workflow stage, not the model stage. There are five things that must be true for teams looking to detect synthetic videos at ingest.
- Designate An Owner. An alert with no named owner gets missed. Detection without accountability becomes another feed nobody watches. Someone needs to be assigned to review and act on the signals.
- Finalize The Deployment Model. Network, security, and GPU questions that surface after the budget is spent cause projects to stall.
- Feed Existing Systems. A separate tool requires a producer or an operator to remember to open it under deadline. If the signal is sent to the tools that teams already use, it gets seen and acted on reliably.
- Extract The Most Information Possible. The score supports the decision. Defending that decision requires knowing what the analysis determined, in plain terms anyone can understand. Make sure any verdicts come with the rationale and reasoning behind them.
- Analyze At The Streaming Layer. Organizations operating on restricted, disconnected, or sovereign networks need detection inside that boundary, on infrastructure they control. Inferencing and analysis can never block streams.
