Wowza Announces Winner of GoCoder SDK App Challenge

Spree by Above Rocks Awarded $5,000 Grand Prize for Best Use of Live Streaming to Create New Class of Mobile Apps

Huntington Beach, Calif. – Nov. 1, 2016 – Wowza Media Systems™, the gold standard for streaming software and services, today announced the Spree application, created by Above Rocks, as the grand prize winner of the GoCoder SDK App Challenge. The Spree app was selected for its use of live streaming to create a new class of applications. As the winner, Above Rocks will receive a cash payment of U.S. $5,000 along with a license to the Wowza GoCoder SDK. The winners were announced during the 2016 Streaming Media West conference.

The Wowza GoCoder SDK App Challenge drew interest from more than 200 mobile developers around the world. The top contest submissions made impressive implementations of VR/360° streaming, live event streaming and mobile journalism. The grand prize winner, special award winner and honorable mentions are as follows:

Grand prize winner
Spree, by Above Rocks – A unique digital shopping experience for iOS, using live streaming to create and curate unique content from leading style bloggers and influencers, and allow for one-click purchasing via Apple Pay.

Special award: Best developer enablement
Challenge, by Oxagile – A new platform for developers to deliver live VR, AR, and 360-degree immersive experiences for gamers and others, powered by the Unity® gaming engine.

Honorable mention: Best use of using live streaming to enhance an app
beBee, by beBee – Adds a way to create and share new streaming “Live Buzz” moments to your beBee social network, and save them as VOD experiences for later viewing.

Honorable mention: Best use of the Wowza platform
XPosee, by MPlay Media – Designed for the emerging mobile journalist newsroom, provides a real-time view into global events by providing a consolidated platform to capture and playback of breaking stories. 

The GoCoder SDK greatly reduces development time with a cross-platform API to simplify capturing and streaming live video and audio with mobile apps. Submitters to the contest were required to present a working mobile software application that used the Wowza GoCoder SDK to stream to Wowza Streaming Engine software or the Wowza Streaming Cloud service.
