Remove an Akamai stream source from a live stream or transcoder

As of January 16, 2020, Akamai stream sources are no longer functional. To prevent a disruption of service, you'll need to update existing Akamai stream source configurations by doing one of the following:

  • Replace the Akamai stream source with a Wowza stream source.
  • Remove the Akamai stream source and send the stream directly to the transcoder.
Note: You can view and delete existing Akamai stream sources in the Wowza Streaming Cloud user interface.

Replace an Akamai stream source with a Wowza stream source

The steps for replacing an Akamai stream source with a Wowza stream source are the same for both live streams and transcoders. After you replace the stream source, you'll need to update the connection information that your camera or encoder uses to connect to Wowza Streaming Cloud.

Note: Wowza stream sources don't provide the same functionality as Akamai stream sources.

  • An Akamai stream source is a Wowza Streaming Cloud edge resource. If one source stream fails, Wowza Streaming Cloud continues to receive and process the source video on the additional, backup stream source, ensuring that playback continues uninterrupted for your viewers.
  • Wowza stream sources provide an entry point into Wowza Streaming Cloud that automatically detects the broadcast location of your source encoder or camera and uses the closest ingest point based on a DNS query. A transcoder connected to a Wowza stream source starts automatically when the video source starts and stops automatically when the video source disconnects.
  1. In Wowza Streaming Cloud, click the Advanced menu, click Stream Sources, and then click Add Source.
  2. On the Add Wowza Stream Source page, enter a Stream Source Name.
  3. Click Add.

Note: Wowza stream sources don't support source authentication.

Wowza Streaming Cloud creates the stream source. Next, update the transcoder and associate it with the stream source you just created.

  4. On the Advanced menu, click Transcoders, and then select a transcoder on the Transcoders page.

Note: Transcoders that were created through the live stream workflow appear as [Live stream name] / Transcoder.
  5. Click the Transcoder Setup tab and then click Edit.
  6. Under Choose one of your sources, select the Wowza stream source you created in Steps 1-3.
  7. Click Save.
  8. Update the information your camera or encoder uses to connect to Wowza Streaming Cloud. Refer to documentation for your specific encoder to note where to input the stream settings.

    • If you updated a live stream, the Primary Server, Host Port, and Stream Name are located on the live stream Video Source and Transcoder tab.
    • If you updated a transcoder, the Connection Code, Primary Server, Host Port, and Stream Name are located on the transcoder Overview tab.

Alternatively, you can remove the stream source and send the stream directly to the transcoder. After you remove an Akamai stream source from a live stream or transcoder, you'll need to update the connection information that your camera or encoder uses to connect to Wowza Streaming Cloud.

Remove an Akamai stream source from a live stream

  1. Click Live Streams on the menu bar, and then select a live stream on the Live Streams page.
  2. Click the Video Source and Transcoder tab and then click Edit.
  3. Under Source Delivery Method, select Push directly to Wowza Streaming Cloud.
  4. Click Save.

Next, update the information your camera or encoder uses to connect to Wowza Streaming Cloud using the Primary Server, Host Port, and Stream Name on the Video Source and Transcoder tab. Refer to documentation for your specific encoder to note where to input the stream settings.
